Carpets

The origin of how, when, and where carpets came into existence is still a mystery. However, many believe that nomads first created carpets because they wanted to provide a covering on the floor of their tents. Carpets are still very much in use today, both for utilitarian and aesthetic purposes. Just as they were used in the past, most carpets function as floor coverings to prevent direct contact to the ground. They are also sometimes used as wall coverings and decorations to make the house more beautiful and inviting.

Because of the usefulness of carpets in everyday living, they have become common fixtures in the home. They have also played important roles in festive and traditional ceremonies. At Camelback Consign and Design, we have a vast collection of carpets that are perfect ornaments for your home. If you are after a specific theme or design, it will be easier for you to choose from any of our Oriental, wool, and silk rugs.

Oriental

Carpets play a very important role in Oriental furnishings. Because of the sparseness of decorations and furniture, carpets took the place of ceiling and wallpapers to enhance the overall look of the home. They were also used as wall hangings that served the same purpose as paintings, etchings, and plaques.

In the East, it is common to remove one’s shoes before entering a home or a religious structure so rugs became important for both domestic and religious reasons.

Strictly speaking, Oriental rugs are carpets, which have been hand knotted in Asia. Some of the biggest exporters of Oriental rugs are China, India, Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, Nepal, and Tibet. Iran, or Persia, has produced some of the most popular and in demand Oriental carpets. Persian rugs are known for their thickness and for their unique designs, which are tremendously rich in color. The patterns, weave, and palette of the rugs are generally unique and are closely linked to the native culture of the weavers.

Wool

Wool is one of the oldest fibers known to man. Although wool tends to be one of the most expensive materials for carpets today, it has maintained its popularity.

Many still consider wool ideal for carpet- and rug-making because it:

  • isn’t likely to provide shelter to dust mites
  • contains lanolin, which helps the fibers resist stain naturally
  • is biodegradable and durable – qualities that people who want to go green love

Silk

Many people regard silk carpets as the most exotic type there is. These rugs often have detailed patterns, bright colors, dense knotting, and shiny appearance. These characteristics are the reasons why people consider silk rugs works of art.

Silk carpets are often used as accent pieces in a room. They may be used as a beautiful wall hanging or an exquisite floor decoration. It is ideal, however, to put silk rugs in low traffic areas in order to preserve their color and luster.

Are you looking for something that will give your workspace a more cosy or elegant look? Try adding a carpet that will blend with the existing decorations of the room.

Since we accept consignment, let us know if you have classic rugs or carpets that you think others will love and appreciate. We would love to find them a new home for you.
